The Gain of the Amplifier is Set. Typical is 70 dB
Your amp is Psat=50 Watts = +47 dBm Psat output
Amp operates best at Plinear is 3 dB back off from Psat = +44 dBm (25 watts)
Amp can be pushed to P1 dB = +46 dBm
So with 0 db attenuation, 70 dB gain. Your input signal power level to meet Max output of +46 dBm = negative -24 dBm Max input
Sometimes your input can’t be adjusted to neg -24 dBm or lower, so you will use the attenuator to lower the Gain in order to not saturate the output of the amplifier over +46 dBm.
When you add dB’s of atten , it lowers the gain of the Amp.
So if your Modulator or Upconverter output is Min -20 dBm, you must lower the level to less than -24 dBm using the Amp attenuator.
Your gain in the amp is now 70 – 4 dB atten = 66 dB gain.
